More letters to the editor, Dec. 16, 2010: Era of big government is unaffordable
The number of people writing letters to the editor wanting to see tax rates on their fellow citizens rise is stunning. It appears to me that most of these people think that the money belongs to the government, not the people that earned it. There are several lessons these people need to learn. First, the […]

Letters to the Editor: Taxes, jobless benefits hot topics
Once again the voters have screwed up. We keep putting politicians in office instead of people who will represent us. The politicos know this, so they sit back and continue to play bully in the sandbox while we the non-millionaires continue to get buried. Anyone who believes that millionaires need a tax break or that […]

Letters to the Editor, Dec. 14, 2010Maine should not join lawsuit against health care reform
Let me get this straight. Gov.-elect Paul LePage has asked incoming Attorney General William Schneider to join one of the lawsuits against the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare for some of you). The rationale for doing so is that the individual mandate portion of that law (effective in 2014 )is unconstitutional. In articulating that position, LePage’s […]

Letters to the editor, Dec. 13, 2010’Oz’ awakened desire to see the world
Thanks for the memories, Avery! (“You can see ‘The Wizard of Oz’ on the big screen at the State Theatre’s 1930s Night,” Dec. 2, by Avery Yale Kamila). Way back in 1939 when I was 10 years old my mother gave me a quarter because I had been such a good girl, so I could […]

Letters to the editor, Dec. 12, 2010: Readers respond to road costs
In regards to Maine’s high cost of road maintenance (“On the Roads Again,” Nov. 28) there is one simple, obvious solution: Sell the contract, equipment and other assets to Cianbro Corp. Allow this Maine-based, nationally recognized company manage our entire road system with the care, respect and efficiency that they apply to all of their […]

Letters to the editor, Dec. 11, 2010Medicare needs more than a Band-Aid
I was pleased to see both the House and Senate recently approved a one-month patch to keep Medicare paying physicians at their current rate. However, this is just a patch. I hope that our congressional delegates will work for a longer solution so that our seniors can have peace of mind knowing their doctors won’t […]

More letters to the editor, Dec. 11, 2010Tax cuts stir deep feelings
I would like to express my disappointment with President George W. Bush’s choice to give massive tax cuts to the wealthy at a time when our country and its economy were burdened with the cost of the Iraq war. I believe this directly contributed to the collapse of our economic system. Because of the economic […]

Letters to the editorImmigrant youths need Congress’ help
I would like to express my support of the DREAM Act becoming a reality for immigrant youths in Maine.

Polling shows that between 60 percent and 70 percent of the public support this act, and both Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins have supported the DREAM Act in the past.

Undocumented youths who arrive in the United States before the age of 16 have no other country to call home and through this act are required to graduate from high school, have good moral character and complete two years of college or military service before achieving citizenship.

Letters to the editor, Dec. 9, 2010: Eagle’s nest gets support, as does bypass
The lead editorial on Dec. 3 had a headline that read, “Bypass plan has more than one problem” with a smaller headine that read, “The discovery of a bald eagle nest has temporarily put the $100 million road project on hold.” I am reminded of a Brunswick project that was not put on hold. The […]

Letters to the editor, Dec. 8, 2010Winter use of beach unfairly limited
I am writing to voice my concern for plans to reduce and limit beachfront parking at Scarborough’s Higgins Beach during the off-season. I frequently visit Higgins Beach due to its accessibility and beauty. It is unique in that it offers easy public access. During my visits, I frequently support local businesses such as buying sandwiches […]
