This photograph appeared in the May 12, 1961 edition of the Portland Evening Express as part of a 2-page spread on the proposed Munjoy South urban renewal district. The buildings pictured had been slated for demolition in the city’s original urban renewal plan. Ultimately, most of these buildings were spared (as seen in the September 2015 photo) but several nearby blocks were bulldozed to make way for the Munjoy South and Washington Square apartment complexes.
