HIGH SCHOOLS

Arnaud Sioho of South Portland High has been chosen as Gatorade Maine Boys’ Track and Field athlete of the year after a junior season in which he won four events and set two meet records at the Class A state championships.

Sioho, a junior, broke records in the long jump and triple jump and also won both hurdles races while leading South Portland to the team title. A week later, Sioho won the triple jump at the New England championships with a leap of 48-4 3/4.

GOLF

U.S. SENIOR OPEN: Portland High graduate Jeff Martin put himself in position to make the cut at the U.S. Senior Open, shooting an even-par 70 in the opening round Thursday at Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island.

Martin was tied for 43rd place. The top 60, plus ties, after the second round advance to the final two rounds.

Martin, 50, graduated from Portland High in 1992. He is the head professional at Wollaston Golf Club in Milton, Massachusetts.

Playing in the first group of the round, Martin parred his first 14 holes, then went birdie-bogey-birdie-bogey to finish his round.

Japan’s Hiroyuki Fujita and Australia’s Richard Green share the lead at 7-under 63.

NEW ENGLAND WOMEN’S AMATEUR: Three-time Class B state champion Jade Haylock of Leavitt finished in a tie for eighth-place at the Samoset Resort in Rockland.

Haylock, who will be a senior at Leavitt this fall, closed with an 8-over 79 for a three-day total of 18-over 231.

Maria Cianchette of the Woodlands was alone in 11th place at 19 over.

PGA: Akshay Bhatia chipped in for eagle from 83 feet on the 17th hole and ended with a birdie for an 8-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.

Taylor Montgomery and Michael Kim were a stroke back.

LPGA: Ruoning Yin of China and Atthaya Thitikul of Thailand started out on a heater and held it together on their back nine in foursomes for a 6-under 64, giving them a share of the lead with two other teams after the opening round of the Dow Championship in Midland, Michigan.

Ally Ewing and Jennifer Kupcho made an eagle late in their round and joined the Thai duo of Chanettee Wannasaen and Jaravee Boonchant as the other teams at 64.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Home player Andrea Pavan was part of a three-way share of the lead after the first round of the Italian Open in Cervia, Italy.

Pavan’s bogey-free 64 put him at 7 under, along with Denmark’s Sebastian Friedrichsen and American Gunner Wiebe.

BASEBALL

EASTERN LEAGUE: The Binghamton Rumble Ponies broke open a close game by plating six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as they pulled away for an 8-0 win over the Portland Sea Dogs in Binghamton, New York.

Three Binghamton pitchers held the Sea Dogs to six hits. Juan Daniel Encarnacion was saddled with the loss despite striking out six and allowing only one run in four innings. He gave up four hits and walked none.

TENNIS

WIMBLEDON: Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray still had not decided as of Thursday whether he will be able to compete at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament that begins next week and said he is likelier to enter doubles rather than singles if he can play at all after recent surgery to remove a cyst on his spinal cord.

The All England Club announced Thursday night that Murray and his older brother, Jamie, were granted a wild-card entry for men’s doubles.

Wimbledon begins Monday. The draw to determine the singles brackets is Friday.

HOCKEY

NHL: The Edmonton Oilers said General Manager Ken Holland will not have his contract renewed, calling it a mutual decision between the veteran executive and the NHL club.

Holland spent the past five seasons as the Oilers’ GM and built a team that advanced to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final before losing to the Florida Panthers. His departure has been anticipated since Connor McDavid’s longtime agent, Jeff Jackson, took over as CEO of hockey operations last August.

Holland, 68, spent 22 seasons as GM of the Detroit Red Wings, winning the Cup three times: in 1998, 2002 and 2008.

FORMULA ONE: Three-time defending Formula One champion Max Verstappen dispelled any lingering doubts about his immediate future by saying he will remain at Red Bull next season.

Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull through 2028, but Lewis Hamilton’s vacant seat at Mercedes next season has spawned speculation about the German team attempting to lure Verstappen away.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Arike Ogunbowale had 23 points, five 3-pointers and nine assists, veteran guard Odyssey Sims added 18 points in her season debut, and the Dallas Wings snapped an 11-game losing streak with a 94-88 victory over the Minnesota Lynx in Arlington, Texas.
