The Brick Store Museum is gearing up for a summer of historical fun in the Kennebunks. To kick off the summer, sports fans are invited to a game of vintage baseball on July 6.

The game will be played by “living history” teams, with reenactors wearing authentic wool uniforms that baseball players would’ve been wearing when the game was invented in the 1860s.

Baseball fans will be intrigued to witness the game played with different, original rules, museum Director Cynthia Walker told the Post.

“It’s a really fun event,” Walker said. “It gets people outside and gets them cheering.”

The Dirigo Base Ball Club of Maine will face off against Massachusetts’ Mudville team at 11 a.m. on the Kennebunk High School baseball field.

Tickets are $10 to benefit the museum’s educational mission, and kids ages 12 and under can attend for free.

“Making history come alive is our job,” Walker said. “Now, mix history with baseball and it’s quite the event. It’s something that’s touched all of our lives.”

Also this summer, the museum will host a Summer Street Backyard and Barns event on July 16, where participants will get the chance to tour the barns and backyards of four historic Summer Street homes.

Most locals have probably driven down Summer Street at one time or another and wondered about the history of the elaborate homes, , Walker said. Backyard and Barns is an opportunity to get a look into the lives of the original owners, she said.

“All of the houses on the tour are ones that I think we’ve all wondered about as we drive by,” Walker said.

Her own favorite house will be featured on the tour, and without giving too much away, Walker said that the man who built it was one of the only gentlemen who wasn’t participating in the shipbuilding industry taking place right behind his house.

The Backyard and Barns tour takes place from 4 to 7 p.m. on July 26, and tickets range from $45 to $50.

The Brickstore Museum has several other events happening throughout the summer, including Historic District Walking Tours and a Kennebunk Beach Walking Tour, where participants will learn about the history of tourism in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport while strolling the Kennebunk Beach area.
