Dr. Howard Manning Chase

SOUTH PORTLAND – Dr. Howard Manning Chase, 87, of South Portland, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2024 at Maine Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Kirksville, Missouri on March 16, 1937, son to the late Howard and Bertha (Knight) Chase.

Manning received his education through the local school department and then promptly began pursuing his passion in the medical field – beginning with his undergraduate training at the University of Kansas City. He later graduated from the Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1963, studied surgery at Doctor’s Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri from 1963-1968 and participated in a general rotating Internship at Osteopathic Hospital of Maine in Portland from 1968-1969. Manning entered into General Practice in Scarborough, Maine in 1969 where he remained until his retirement in 2018. His work included obstetrics, general medicine, hospital practice, nursing home care as well as numerous house calls.

Manning was a hardworking and dedicated man careerwise and enjoyed woodworking in his spare time, but nothing could hold a candle to time spent with his family. From summers with his grandparents in Rockland, Maine to capitalizing on every chance he had to spend time with his children; nothing brought him more joy than that.

Dr. Manning Chase devoted himself to providing exceptional care to all the patients he attended to and treated them all like family. He certainly left behind a legacy in the thousands of families whose lives were touched by his tireless, unselfish and dedicated care throughout a medical career which spanned nearly half a century.

Manning is survived by his three children; Scott Chase, D.O., Jeffrey Chase and Rebecca Peterlein as well as six grandchildren.

Per Manning’s wishes, there will not be any services at this time.
