Ever wonder where reporters get their ideas? Press Herald Managing Editor Nita Lelyveld sat down with Press Herald reporter Eric Russell, Morning Sentinel reporter Dylan Tusinski and Sun Journal photojournalist Andree Kehn for a conversation on Zoom to discuss how journalists find their stories. This event took place on Thursday, June 27.

Eric Russell has been a general assignment reporter at the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2012 . Because he doesn’t have a specific geographic or topical area to cover, Eric roams the state in pursuit of the most interesting stories. His favorite assignments are ones where he can leave the office and meet with people in their homes or their workplaces to talk about their struggles and challenges – and sometimes their triumphs. Eric grew up in Southern Maine, went to college at the University of Maine and worked in Bangor for eight years before joining the Press Herald. He lives in Brunswick with his wife, a school teacher, and two daughters.

Dylan Tusinski is a general assignment reporter at the Morning Sentinel covering Winslow, Vassalboro, Belgrade, and other communities in northern Kennebec County. He graduated from Colorado State University in 2023, double majoring in political science and journalism & media communications. While in college, Dylan wrote about news, politics, art, entertainment and more for The Rocky Mountain Collegian, one of the oldest student-run newspapers in the country.

Andree Kehn is a staff photographer who has worked full time for the Sun Journal since 2015. She covers sports assignments, breaking news and features, but her heart loves assignments photographing people immersed in their own unique passions. She has an eclectic past, including having been a carny, a ski bum, a lifeguard, an army brat, a motorcycle rider, an organic gardener, a tour-director and cat-lover. She loves to find common ground with all of her photography subjects.
