Matthew Sturgis was sworn in as the new town manager and tax collector Monday at the Cumberland Town Council meeting.

Sturgis

Sturgis comes to Cumberland from Cape Elizabeth, where he served as town manager between 2017 and 2024. In total, he spent almost 25 years working for the town of Cape Elizabeth.

Retiring Town Manager Bill Shane will work with Sturgis during his first few weeks in office to help him settle in, according to Shane.

“I would like to send condolences to Cape Elizabeth,” joked Councilor Shirley Storey-King, who said she was thrilled to have Sturgis join Cumberland’s town government.

Monday also marked the final meeting for Councilors Mark Segrist, Ronald Copp and Storey-King, who did not seek reelection.
