The Kennebunk High School class of 2024 began their high school careers four years ago in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. But as 167 of them became graduates on Sunday morning, they spoke of growth and resilience.

With the challenge of overcoming a pandemic while also starting high school, KHS principal Jeremie Sirois said the class of 2024 is a “special” one.

“They are going to go on and do some really great things,” Sirois told the Post. “I look forward to hearing from them in the future.”

On Sunday, class salutatorian Hannah Viden spoke of the challenges of beginning high school during a global pandemic, noting that the experience made returning to an in-person school even more cherished.

“It has helped us get to where we are today, whether we realized it or not,” Viden said.

Class valedictorian Anelise Peterson told her peers to observe the global picture before focusing on the smaller one, and to embrace the adventure of life.

“As you adventure into the unknown, remember to step into the moment,” Peterson said.

In the fall, Peterson plans to attend a four-year university to study environmentalism and studio arts.

Viden will be attending Harvard University where she plans to major in a life-science related field.

As the graduation ceremony closed on a sunny, bright Sunday morning, the class of 2024 cheered and threw their caps, walking off the football field into an equally bright future.

“We are certainly going to miss their energy and enthusiasm in the building,” Sirois said.
