Jameson Robert Haskell Oakes, of Arundel, passed away on May 28 surrounded by the flora and fauna he adored. He was born June 21, 2001, in York, to the most blessed mother and father.
Jameson was a man of many qualities and talents, an avid reader and constant searcher of knowledge was his stock and trade. He was formally educated in Kennebunk, but his real education was in the wood lots and waters he was always destined to explore. He was an artist; a lover of outstanding music, a fine cigar. a smooth bourbon and always enjoyed the company of a charismatic woman. Jameson had an uncanny eye for exceptional antiques and the finer things in life. He lived more of a life in his 22 years than most people into their dotage. He was a man that made you feel loved and cared for and he had a passion for exceptional woodworking and anything handcrafted with beauty and skill.
Jameson treated everyone he met with the same level of respect and kindness. He could hold a conversation with anyone of any social status or political affiliation. He was constantly exploring the new and improved way to coax a brook trout or blue fish from its briny home or delivering the perfect cast in a trout pool on a crisp spring evening. He hunted not only for sport, but for sustenance and could prepare and cook his game as well as any fine chefs. He grew magnificent gardens and doted on his delicate tea roses.
Jameson was a young man, but in many ways an old soul. He was fascinated with learning about his family heritage and activities that most people his age don’t, including spending time at duck camp without electricity, water or Wi-Fi, building a small boat and a smoke house with his father to smoke game and fish he caught, picking fiddleheads, foraging for mushrooms and talking to his grandparents about life lessons and just laughing. His sense of humor was completely irreverent and endearing. Jameson became the 14th generation master mason in his family when he recently joined Arundel Lodge 76, AF & AM in Kennebunkport. He was close to completing his Registered Maine Guide course for fishing and was looking toward a career as a Maine Game Warden.
Jameson was always curious and not judgmental. He would want those who had the honor of knowing him not to weep for him but be inspired by him. He was truly a gem! He leaves his father, Donald Oakes of Arundel, his mother, Kimberly Joy, and grandparents Richard and Candace Joy of Wells. In addition, he will be greatly missed by his many relatives and a wide circle of friends who all loved him dearly. He is predeceased by his fraternal grandparents, Leonard H Oakes and Beverly Ann Oakes of Ipswich, Massachusetts.
A celebration of Jameson’s life will be held on Sept. 28, 2024, at the Wells Harbor Pavilion from 2-4 p.m. Anyone who knew and cared about Jameson is welcome to attend and share a favorite memory of him.
