Marjorie L. Sawtelle

SOUTH PORTLAND – Marjorie L. Sawtelle, 95, longtime resident of South Portland, passed away on July 7, 2022, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on Feb. 13, 1927 and raised in Cherryfield, a daughter of Vernon and Eunice Tenan.

She moved to South Portland for her senior year, graduating from South Portland High School. She later married Derwood Sawtelle in 1950 in Waterville. They moved to South Portland in 1956 where they raised their family of five children. Marjorie worked for many years as a switchboard operator at New England Telephone Co.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Derwood Sr.; her sister, Joyce Northrup and her brother, Larry Tenan.

She is survived by her children Judith Sass and her husband Bradley, of Homosassa, Fla., Derwood Jr. “Woody” and his wife Barbara of Saco, Russell and his wife Mimoza of Windham, Sherri Davis and her husband Frank of South Portland, Vicki Currier and her husband John of Saco; 13 grandchildren and their spouses; 20 great-grandchildren; her brother, Leroy Tenan and his wife Patricia of Camano Island, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews. She was expecting her first great-great-grandchild in August 2022.

Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12 at Jones Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13 at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St. Portland. A reception will be immediately following at 77 Brigham St., South Portland.
