Jessie E. (Clark) Whittemore

SACO – Jessie E. (Clark) Whittemore, 85, of Hubbard Street passed away unexpectedly Wednesday Feb. 16, 2022, at the Southern Maine Health Care surrounded by her children.

Jessie was born May 7, 1936, the daughter of Walter and Lucy Davis Clark. She grew up along the Saco River on the Boom Road where her parents and her brother, Walter, gardened and raised geese, ducks and chickens.

Jessie attended local schools and graduated from Thornton Academy in 1956.

She worked as a bookkeeper for Sweeter Children’s Home where she was introduced to Robert Whittemore, whom she would marry in 1965. When they started to build their family, she became a stay-at-home mom to her six children. They were members of the First Parish Congregational Church.

Jessie kept busy by selling Avon and Tupperware to many community residents and babysitting neighborhood children. She later became a CNA and then earned her LPN license after training at Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in South Portland. She worked in nursing homes and assisted living facilities including Evergreen Manor, Good Shepard Villa, and retired from 75 State Street in Portland. During her early retirement she kept busy with gardening, visiting with friends and family and volunteering at the Saco Museum. She still had a desire to continue nursing and took a per diem position at St André Health Care where she continued to work as an LPN for several years before completely retiring.

She was a long-term member of the International Association of Rebekah Assemblies (IARA), Olive #21 Lodge. She was a devoted member and held positions of Secretary and Treasurer.

She enjoyed gardening, reading, fishing, traveling, doing crafts, leaf peeping, spending time with family at her childhood plot of land on the Saco River and watching the fishing boats at Pine Point. She was an avid animal lover and had several dogs, cats, ducks, geese, chickens and parakeets that she raised over the years.

Jessie was predeceased by a son, Wayne Whittemore.
She is survived by a son, James Whittemore and wife Debbie of Jacksonville, Fla. and four daughters, Robin Dimitrova of Saco, Hope Lambert of Saco, Holly Andrews and husband Brad of Holden, and Ellen Farrar husband Rick of Saco; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours are to be held Friday Feb. 25, 2022, from 12 to 1 p.m. at Dennett, Craig & Pate 365 Main St, Saco. A 1 p.m. funeral service will follow at the funeral home with burial to follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Rev. Scott Cousineau will officiate.
