Portland police are investigating the unlawful removal of about 65 political signs near Deering Oaks on Saturday night.

The signs, which belonged to about 15 different campaigns and political affiliations, were either upended or removed and dumped in a circle at Deering Oaks between High and State Street extensions, said Rep. Ben Chipman, an independent representing District 40 who made the discovery and reported it to police.

Chipman said the signs were in place Saturday night when he checked on his signs in the area.

Portland police said removing the signs is a civil offense. Officers have been instructed to be on the lookout for campaign sign removal, which often occurs during campaign season, police said.
