A newspaper carrier for the Morning Sentinel in Waterville was killed Wednesday morning when his car struck a tree in Salem Township in Franklin County, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Tom Poulin, 48, of Farmington, was traveling toward Kingfield on Route 142 between Phillips and Kingfield when he lost control of his 2005 Subaru Outback on a curve at about 6:30 a.m., Trooper Reid Bond said.

Bond said Poulin was near the end of his route when the crash occurred, according to a police news release.

Poulin died at the scene, McCausland said.

Charlene McGraw, circulation manager for the Morning Sentinel and Kennebec Journal in Augusta, said Wednesday that Poulin had been an independent contractor for the Morning Sentinel for more than 20 years and was a dedicated worker.

In addition to his motor route delivering the Morning Sentinel, Poulin delivered the Lewiston Sun-Journal.

“He was a very nice man, would help you out if you needed help,” McGraw said. “It’s so sad.”

He leaves a wife, Lisa, and children, McGraw said.
