INDIAN TOWNSHIP — A Passamaquoddy from Maine’s Indian Township is joining a delegation at a special conference created after the cancellation of the 14th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates.

The world summit in South Africa was supposed to be this month in Cape Town but several Nobel Peace laureates pulled out because the South African government failed to issue a visa to the Dalai Lama.

Instead, it’s being replaced by an event starting Saturday that’s aimed at youth.

George Soctomah Neptune, 25, will participate in a program comprised of sessions with Nobel Laureate organizations and individual recipients around the theme of “Leading by Example.”

Neptune says he sees an opportunity to raise awareness of the rights of indigenous people and to educate others about the devastating effects of colonialism on indigenous cultures.
