PHIPPSBURG

The Phippsburg Elementary School gym was at capacity as residents gathered to celebrate at their town’s 200th birthday party.

Approximately 200 residents gathered May 8 for the party, said Mike Young, Phippsburg’s town administrator.

The elementary school band played the happy birthday song and art teacher Romy Polizotto hung birthday themed student artwork throughout the school building, including renderings of Phippsburg architecture and wildlife.

Teacher Betsy Card’s fourth grade class performed a dramatic re-enactment of the signing of Phippsburg’s charter for the attendees.

A birthday cake baked by Bath Regional Career and Technical Center students was shared by all, and guests were invited to sign a bannersized birthday card that will be placed in a time capsule.

“We’ll put photographs, programs of town events and other things in the capsule,” said Young, “so that 50 years from now people can see what was happening in our town.”

The time capsule will be sealed at the closing ceremony in November, after the nearly year-long schedule of anniversary celebrations. It will be opened during the town’s 250th anniversary celebration.
