BELGRADE — Hammond Lumber Company, headquartered in Belgrade, recently purchased the assets of Dexter Supply in Wilton, representing a hand-off from one longtime Maine family business to another.

Dexter Supply, located five miles from Hammond Lumber’s Farmington facility, now becomes the 13th store for Hammond, which began in 1953 as a three-man sawmill and entered the retail building supply business in 1967.

Most of the employees of Dexter Supply, owned by Kelly and Jennifer Dexter, had worked for the business all of their working lives.

“These are very knowledgeable people,” said Hammond Lumber vice president Mike Hammond, “and we looking forward to welcoming them into our company.”

Hammond says the former Dexter facility will run in tandem with Hammond Lumber’s Farmington location, and its manager, Al Feather, will oversee both operations.

Hammond Lumber Company’s other stores are located in Auburn, Bangor, Belgrade, Boothbay Harbor, Brunswick, Damariscotta, Fairfield, Farmington, Greenville, Pemaquid, Portland and Skowhegan.
