BRUNSWICK — The eighth grade Dragons football team came away with a 20-8 victory over Tripp on Saturday in the first round of the playoffs for the Mid Coast Middle School Football League.

After stopping the Tigers on the opening drive, the Dragons drove 72 yards down field with key runs by Ryan Duffy, Donald Bromiley and Nate Girardin with a 2-yard touchdown run by Duffy.

Duffy scored his second touchdown soon after when he ran 22 yards as part of a 70-yard series and with a Sam Sharpe catch from Noah Cox on the 2-point conversion, the Dragons led 14-0. Hunter Backhaus added to the scoring with a run of his own with nine seconds remaining in the second quarter to propel Brunswick to a 20-0 half-time lead.

“All season our offense has done a great job with long sustained drives that wears down the defense,” Dragons coach Girardin said. “Our backs are doing a nice job running the ball up field and the offensive line is making some nice holes at the line of scrimmage.”

Trey Curtis, Shayne Garrett, Cole Engstrom, and Parker Eckert led the charge on the offensive line for the Dragons. The defense played well and was sparked by an interception by Jacob Belanger in the second half. Linebackers Duffy, Kameron Harrison, Nick Munn, Kohen Bailey, Bromiley, and Belanger played well defensively and led the team in tackles. Jeremiah McNeill, Connor Pendergast, Brady Mitchell, and Reilly Rafford worked hard up front to help the defense control the line of scrimmage.

“I believe we’re playing better than we’ve played all season and the team is having a lot fun,” Girardin said.
