As, a business man in Brunswick for over 35 years, I support Joyce “Jay” McCreight, running for the first time to represent District 51 as a state representative.
Jay and her family, including two grown sons, have lived in Maine for over 30 years, the last 8 in Harpswell. Jay is retired and her husband, Tim, is a businessman owns and runs his own book business in Cook’s Corner. With few home duties and responsibilities, Jay plans on being a full-time state rep.
It is important to understand that government has become very complex and time consuming. Most candidates running for public office are all familiar with the issues: better jobs, protecting our environment, improving education, health needs, an aging population, etc.
Jay, not a one-issue candidate, has been involved in education most of her adult life and continues to support public education. A new Charter School, opened last year with 60 students, increased to 120 this year has been very successful. Yes, the funding issue must be resolved, but the main question: Is it possible for both systems to work together to offer our children a better and broader education? Having a person like Jay, with her experience in this field, will go a long way in trying to find common ground.
Casco Bay is changing quite rapidly and our fishing industry and fishing families are all threatened. This is a major issue and should be given top priority. Jay has talked with local fishermen and has met with a representative from Bigelow Labs to try to understand, first hand, the problems that mother nature and man have created and to become more involved in seeking to find solutions.
The importance of this office, for state rep, can be extended by a candidate like Jay and help give our community better representation in Augusta. Let’s use our vote wisely — vote for Jay on Nov. 4.
