HILTON HEAD, SC — Betty Ball Hornor, 85, of Hilton Head, SC, passed away Monday, November 28th, 2011 surrounded by the love and prayers of her children. She is survived by her husband, Frank Berkshire Hornor, to whom she was happily married for 63 years. She is also survived by her daughter, Patt Allen of Newnan, GA, and her son, Jim Hornor of Brunswick, ME; their respective spouses, Homer Allen and Eileen Hornor; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren; her sister, Colleen Plantinga of Westport, CT; nieces and nephews; and her brother-inlaw and sister-in-law, Larry and Holly Hornor of Amherst, NH. She will be greatly missed by her family.

A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, as well as an accomplished teacher and educational consultant, Betty was born in New Martinsville, WV, one of two daughters of the late Walter Ball and Virginia Shanabarger.

She grew up swimming and boating in the Ohio River, teaching and performing ballet and tap, playing the bell lyre in the high school marching band, and graduating valedictorian of her class at Magnolia High School. She is a graduate of Smith College.

Betty was a lifelong member of the Junior League of Pittsburgh, Washington, DC, and Savannah, GA, as well as the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She is remembered for her warm, extroverted, fun- loving personality, her sense of humor, and the festive quality she brought to all family gatherings.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 3rd at 11 a.m. at the Bridgeport Cemetery in Bridgeport, WV. A church memorial celebration of Betty’s life will be announced and held at a future date.
