PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A new report predicts that by 2018, the percentage of Rhode Island jobs that require a college degree will be the second-lowest in New England.
The paper by Georgetown University researchers says that in eight years, 61 percent of jobs in Rhode Island will require a college education or its equivalent.
In New England, only Maine’s share of 59 percent is projected to be lower.
Massachusetts is tops with a projected 68 percent.
The paper says Rhode Island hosts a below-average number of jobs in professional and business services and finance.
It says that creates lower demand for a college education.
One of the paper’s co-authors told The Providence Journal that though it can seem there’s no point to college, the fastest growing occupations are those that require the most education.
