PORTLAND — Thornton Academy’s undefeated start to the season came to an end on Monday, as the Trojans ran into an unbeaten Deering team that topped them 3-2 in an SMAA boys tennis match.

Victor Menezes easily won in No. 1 singles for Thornton, beating Tyler Butler 6-0, 6-1, but the two teams split the doubles matches and the Rams won in straight sets in both No. 2 and No. 3 singles.

The Trojans’ No. 2 doubles team of Dylan Gooch and Simon Belliveau won in three sets, winning a tiebreaker in the third after dropping one in the second. The No. 1 doubles team of Will Caras and Eric Gooch was on the losing end of a three-set match.

SCARBOROUGH 3, MASSABESIC 0

WATERBORO — The Scarborough boys tennis team continued its dominant start to the season, as the Red Storm won all three completed matches in topping host Massabesic 3-0 on Monday.

Scarborough (8-1) got wins from its No. 1 and No. 2 singles and its No. 1 doubles team before play was suspended due to the weather.

The Red Storm was also leading both the No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles matches, though Massabesic’s Kyle Duffy was rallying in the second set of the No. 3 singles match before it was called off.

Girls Tennis

SANFORD 3, GORHAM 2

SANFORD — The host Spartans swept all three singles matches as Sanford edged Gorham 3-2 in an SMAA girls tennis match on Monday.

All three Sanford singles players won in straight sets, with No. 2 singles player Misa Mai holding off Molly van Luling 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). Kathryn Doiron topped Whitney King 6-4, 6-3 in No.1 singles, and Paige Tranchemontagne ran away with a 6-1, 6-1 win in No. 3 singles.

Both doubles teams ”“ Lauren MacPherson and Ciara Negron in No. 1 doubles, and Alley Nichols and Lauren Vachon in No. 2 doubles ”“ fell in straight sets for the Spartans.

Baseball

BIDDEFORD 10, MASSABESIC 0, 6 innings

BIDDEFORD — Nate Huot allowed just one hit and received plenty of support from his offense as host Biddeford beat Massabesic 10-0 in six innings in an SMAA baseball game at St. Louis Field on Monday.

The Tigers (8-2) turned the game into a rout early with a combined nine runs in the second, third and fourth innings, before finishing off the game with a single run in the bottom of the sixth.

Sean Adams took the loss for the Mustangs (3-7).

YARMOUTH 10, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 2

OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Luke Klenda allowed just one hit in five innings while striking out 10 as visiting Yarmouth beat Old Orchard Beach 10-2 in a WMC baseball game at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach on Monday.

Klenda was aided by a six-run fourth inning by the Clipper offense. Klenda was one of three Yarmouth batters with two hits (he also scored two runs), while Ryan Nason had a game-high three.

Kendal Tatsak, Thomas Fregeau and Mason Beaudoin each had one hit for the Seagulls, who were held scoreless until tallying a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Tatsak took the loss for OOB, as he allowed seven runs (three earned) on six hits over four innings.

Softball

KENNEBUNK 13, FREEPORT 0, 5 innings

FREEPORT — Ally King threw a three-hitter and received plenty of run support as Kennebunk routed host Freeport 13-0 in five innings in a WMC softball game on Monday.

King struck out six batters for the Rams (5-5), who closed the game out with a seven-run fifth inning.

Girls Lacrosse

LEWISTON 11, BIDDEFORD 4

LEWISTON — Sierra Thistlewater scored five goals to lead host Lewiston to an 11-4 win over Biddeford in a Class A girls lacrosse game on Monday.

Katherine Dumoulin and Shaina Speight each had two goals for the Tigers (4-2), while Emily Boisvert stopped 12 shots.

Sam Cote made 18 saves for the Blue Devils (5-2).
