SACO — The Veterans Administration Maine Healthcare Systems is sponsoring a 2K walk to benefit homeless veterans and promote health and wellness at noon Wednesday at the Saco VA Clinic, 655 Main St.

The fourth annual VA2K Walk and Roll runs locally from noon to 1 p.m., and participants are asked to come 20 minutes early.

Participants will walk along the Eastern Trail. They do not need to raise money, but instead are asked to bring donations, such as grocery store and gas gift cards, socks, coats, blankets, cans of food, toothpaste and shampoo.

A walk will also be held in Augusta at Togus VA Medical Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and walks will also be held in Bangor, Caribou and Portland.

At any given time, there are more than 100 homeless veterans in Maine who lack a place to live and other basic necessities, according to a statement from the VA.

In 2013, emergency shelter was provided to 499 homeless veterans across the state, the VA reports, while other homeless veterans languish in their vehicles or encampments, uncounted.
