You don’t see many election signs or advertisements urging you to vote for them ”“ though there are a few signs out there. And the candidates, for the most part, don’t seem to be publicly campaigning for votes.

There are eight candidates who are running for office unopposed in their bid for election or re-election.

Of the eight men and women running unopposed in the area, six are running for county offices ”“ from sheriff to district attorney to county commissioner.

There are two legislative races where there is just one candidate. In House District 14, which includes part of Saco, longtime legislator and incumbent Barry Hobbins, a Democrat, is running unopposed in the Nov. 4 election. Daphne Warren, a Republican, withdrew, as she indicated she would the day after she accepted the nomination as a candidate.

In House District 17, which includes Waterboro and part of Lyman, Elaine Plourde, a Democrat, has withdrawn, meaning Republican Dwayne Prescott is running unopposed for the open seat.

State legislative terms are two years, while county terms are four years.

For York County District Attorney, incumbent Democrat Kathryn Slattery of Old Orchard Beach is running unopposed in her bid for re-election.

County Treasurer incumbent Frank Wood, Democrat, of Saco, is also running for re-election unopposed.

County Register of Deeds incumbent Debra Anderson, a Democrat, is running unopposed. She lives in Springvale.

Incumbent Democrat Sallie Chandler, of Lebanon, is running unopposed in County Commission District 1, which includes the municipalities of Acton, Berwick, Cornish, Lebanon, Limerick, Limington, Newfield, North Berwick, Parsonsfield and South Berwick.

Incumbent Democrat Richard Dutremble, of Biddeford, is also running unopposed in County Commission District 2, which includes the municipalities of Arundel, Biddeford, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport.

For York County Sheriff, current Chief Deputy William “Bill” King is running unopposed after beating out South Berwick Police Chief Dana Lajoie and former deputy Paul Main in a three-way Democratic primary on June 10. After the primary, Lajoie said he would mull a write-in campaign for the county-wide office, but apparently chose not to do so ”“ the deadline to file as a write-in candidate was Sept. 22.
