One of the joys serving in town government is the diversity of issues that come across the selectmen’s desk in Pownal. The latest, as reported during the selectmen’s meeting of Oct. 20 was a rumor of skunks being deported from Winslow Park in South Freeport to the wilderness of Pownal. Apparently, according to the rumored report, a skunk problem erupted at the park and the rumored solution was to live trap the Mephitdae southfreeportidus and transport them to a more supportive environment (in partibus infidelium) in Pownal. My job as selectman is to sniff out the truth in this situation.

As a thoughtful, private citizen of Pownal, however, I have experienced many other items capable of emitting disagreeable effluvia, entering the town through the RSU 5 withdrawal discussion. The collateral damage that this process has inflicted upon school children and their families from Pownal has, quite frankly, stunk. I am left wondering who will the withdrawalists “other” next. Perhaps the skunks at Winslow are an omen for those who disagree.
