ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout missed Thursday’s 4-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays because of a bruised right wrist.

Trout got hurt while sliding during a stolen base attempt of third in the first inning of Wednesday night’s 7-2 defeat to the Rays.

“When I slid into third base, I caught my hand,” Trout said. “Kind of weird. Felt like I just jammed it pretty bad. We taped it and tried to do as much as we could during the game yesterday. But when I woke up it was pretty sore.”

Trout had X-rays on Wednesday and an MRI was planned.

“I didn’t really feel it at the plate, but on deck warming up I could feel it with the weight of the bat,” Trout said.

METS: New York activated third baseman Todd Frazier from the disabled list before Thursday’s game with the Atlanta Braves.

Frazier had been sidelined since July 9 with a left rib cage strain and appeared in two rehab games for Class A Brooklyn this week.

Slugger Yoenis Cespedes had surgery on his right heel, the first of two procedures that will likely sideline him for 8 to 10 months.

Left-hander Steven Matz was diagnosed with a mild flexor pronator strain in his left forearm and could be placed on the disabled list.

Matz didn’t get out of the first inning of his most recent start. He allowed seven runs on eight hits in what became a 25-4 loss at Washington on Tuesday.

Matz complained of tightness in his left forearm after the game. An MRI on Thursday showed mild inflammation but did not reveal any structural damage.

POSTSEASON SCHEDULE: The World Series, often called baseball’s October Classic, could end in October for the first time since 2014.

The commissioner’s office announced that the World Series will start Oct. 23, and a Game 7 would be played on Oct. 31, barring postponements. The World Series ended on Nov. 2 in 2016 and on Nov. 1 in both 2015 and last year.

The National League wild-card game will open Major League Baseball’s postseason for the first time since 2013 and is scheduled for Oct. 2. The AL wild-card game is the following day.

The NL division series is scheduled to start Oct. 4 and the AL on Oct. 5. The NL Championship Series opens Oct. 12, followed by the AL the next day.

DODGERS: Third baseman Justin Turner was activated from the 10-day disabled list by the Dodgers, who put second baseman Chase Utley on the disabled list with left wrist inflammation.

Manny Machado, who played third base while Turner sidelined, moved back to shortstop for Thursday’s series finale against Milwaukee.

Turner broke a wrist when hit by a pitch during spring training and didn’t make his season debut until May 15. He was disabled again July 23 due to a strained right groin. Turner is hitting .259 with five homers, 20 RBI and a .354 on-base percentage in 50 games.

Utley is hitting .240 with one triple, one home run and 14 RBI. The 39-year-old has said he will retire after this season.

DIAMONDBACKS: Third baseman Jake Lamb will have left shoulder surgery and miss the remainder of the season.

Lamb said the damage to his rotator cuff did not cause pain, but limited his ability to swing a bat. He is hoping to be back by spring training in 2019.

GIANTS: Infielder Pablo Sandoval will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his right hamstring while sliding.
