HILTON HEAD, S.C. – On Jan. 30, 2025, Douglas Taft Oppenheimer, 55, passed away after facing esophageal cancer with the same resolve, courage, and heart that he brought to all he did. A beloved teacher and coach, scholar, athlete, and actor, Doug approached life with passion, grit, and sincerity. Most of all, he embraced possibility.
Doug had immense generosity of spirit and took genuine interest in everyone he met, extending love and care through thoughtful conversation and acts of kindness. He was playful and full of antics, and was an introspective, spiritual person.
A celebration of Doug’s life will be held at St. Luke’s Church on Hilton Head Island, S.C. on Saturday, March 29, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
