A Harrison man who was armed and threatening to harm himself was shot and wounded Wednesday afternoon by three Cumberland County deputies after he fired at officers, the sheriff’s office said.

Police responded to a home on Hawk Ridge Road in Harrison after receiving a call from a man who said he was armed and planned to hurt himself, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Wednesday night.

Police say the man, identified as Arthur Lefebvre, 57, was “uncooperative” and fired several rounds at the officers when they arrived at the residence.

Officers learned that there were family members at risk inside the home. After deputies tried unsuccessfully to communicate with Lefebvre, the sheriff’s office said he came outside, confronted the officers with his weapon and three officers shot at and wounded him.

The sheriff’s office has denied public records requests for transcripts of the 911 calls made that afternoon as well as body camera footage of the shooting.

Police said Lefebvre was seriously injured in the shooting and was taken to Maine Medical Center via Lifeflight. Lefebvre had surgery shortly after arriving to the hospital and as of Thursday afternoon was in serious but stable condition, Chief Deputy Brian Pellerin said.

The sheriff’s office on Thursday afternoon identified the deputies involved as patrol deputy Brandon Pelton and detectives Nathan Therriault and Tyler Monsees. The officers will be placed on administrative leave, as is standard practice, while the Office of the Maine Attorney General investigates the use of deadly force. The office hasn’t found a police shooting unjustified since at least 1990.
