Some final thoughts on Question 5, the referendum to change the state flag to the Pine Tree Flag. The existing state flag leaves little for interpretation by Mainers and non-Mainers. Perhaps the only thing needing interpretation is the word Dirigo. This beautiful flag has been around since 1909, a total of 115 years.
The replacement flag was around from 1901 to 1909, eight years. Will the “new flag” come with an interpretation sheet? It’s doubtful that many people can explain the history and meaning of this flag.
I cannot help but consider the financial impact this might have. Maine has many more important needs than foolishly spending money on a new flag design.
Please consider keeping our beautiful flag and voting “no” to oppose changing our state flag. As the old saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
