Popular South Berwick burger joint Lee Frank’s has opened a second location in Wells.

Chef-owner Lee Frank said he launched the new location this month at 231 Post Road, the site of the former Gravy restaurant.

The 1,500-square-foot dining room allows Frank as many as 35 seats inside, with an additional 14-16 outdoor seats on the deck.

Lee Frank’s offers a variety of burgers, hot dogs, fries and shakes. The restaurant, which opened in South Berwick in early 2021, specializes in made-to-order smash burgers.

“After the success of the first one, and with people coming from other areas to visit us, we started looking at spaces,” Frank said, explaining his decision to open in Wells. “We knew there wasn’t a true old-fashioned burger joint in Wells, so we figured it’d be something good to bring to the town. Next year we plan to be busy with families and vacationers. It’s just a really easy, fast place to grab lunch or dinner.”

Lee Frank’s is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

LARGER SPACE FOR PEEKYTOE PROVISIONS

Peekytoe Provisions in Bar Harbor has moved its market and café into a larger, newly built space on Main Street.

Co-owner Drew Smith said Peekytoe moved into its new home at 244 Main St. this month. They’d been at the same address since launching the business in 2014. But Smith said because the roof was in serious disrepair and the building was “crumbling,” Peekytoe had it razed last fall, and operated out of a space in Southwest Harbor for this past summer season.

The new building gives Peekytoe Provisions about 2,400 square feet, roughly 800 square feet more than the previous space. The new site allows the café to increase its seating from 52 to about 80 (including at a full bar), expand its kitchen, add a live lobster tank and give the fish market portion of Peekytoe its own entrance.

The new building also has two three-bedroom apartments on the second floor for year-round housing, which Smith said helps meet an urgent need in Bar Harbor.

In addition to fresh seafood, Peekytoe’s market sells bread, tinned seafood, specialty pantry items and other provisions. Smith said the larger kitchen lets Peekytoe add more dishes to the menu, such as grilled halibut, and scallop-and-shrimp fried rice.

Peekytoe Provisions is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 8:30 p.m. A party celebrating the new space is on Thursday, Oct. 31 from 3-8 p.m.

“The Pint and Pawn opened last year with the idea that we all needed a comfortable place to gather and play,” Laplume said in the video. “In its time, it has been just that for so many people, and I have been truly blessed to watch countless friendships blossom and flourish in this space. Unfortunately, the challenges have become too great, and I have made the difficult decision to close shop at the end of November.”

Laplume could not be reached Tuesday for more details on the impending closure.
