An Alfred man stole at least four vehicles, including a dump truck, and led law enforcement on an hours-long chase through several towns before he was arrested Thursday.

At several points, police officers nearly thwarted Garrett Littlefield, 33, as he led them on series of car chases through York and Cumberland counties, weaving in and out of Maine along the New Hampshire border. But Littlefield managed to evade police on foot multiple times – leaving a series of ditched and damaged vehicles in his wake, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a statement Friday afternoon.

Police first pursued Littlefield as he drove a stolen Chrysler LeBaron through Acton, before driving it over a spike mat that disabled the vehicle late Thursday morning, Moss said. From there, Littlefield fled on foot before stealing a 2014 Ford F-150 from a nearby residence.

Troopers briefly pursued the truck before Littlefield was “lost on back roads,” Moss said.

Members of the public later made traffic complaints about a truck headed north on Route 302 in Bridgton. Again, police canvassed the area but were unable to find Littlefield or the stolen Ford.

About 1 p.m. Thursday, a trooper who had been looking for the blue truck on Route 121 in Otisfield saw another pickup truck – this time, a black Chevrolet – speed past a stop sign at more than 100 mph. The trooper began a high-speed chase with the car through Casco.

“The Ford F-150 was later located a short distance from a dealership on Main Street in Oxford where the Chevy truck was stolen,” Moss said in the release.

Police set up another spike mat at the intersection of Routes 121 and 11 in Casco. Though Littlefield drove over the spikes, he continued to drive until “at least 2 tires fell off” the truck and it careened into a ditch.

He and a passenger, 22-year-old Shantel Rodriguez, of Biddeford, ran out of the truck. Police arrested Rodriguez, but Littlefield escaped into a nearby wooded area and was not seen for several more hours. Four agencies, including the Maine Forest Service and Warden Service, canvassed the woods, but were unable to locate the man, Moss said.

After 5 p.m., the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office began receiving complaints of a dump truck driving erratically at high speeds. Police later confirmed Littlefield was driving that truck, which he had stolen from a new housing development in Casco, Moss said.

Littlefield stopped at a gas station along Route 302 in Bridgton, where he attempted to steal a Subaru Outback from a couple fueling up the car, Moss said. But police were already on the scene, and they arrested Littlefield before he was able to escape again. Moss said neither of the couple were injured.

Police took Littlefield to be evaluated at a nearby hospital before transporting him to Cumberland County Jail.

He faces more than a half-dozen charges, including eluding, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, and operating a vehicle with a suspended license, Moss said in the statement. Rodriguez, Littlefield’s passenger, is charged with assaulting a police officer and a police K-9, refusing to submit and violating conditions of release, Moss said.
