Even though it’s still early October, we’ll get an early taste of the fall sports postseason this weekend, as the golf state championships will be held.

For football, soccer, field hockey, volleyball and cross country, the regular season continues and the best is yet to come.

Here’s a look back at the week that was and a glimpse at what’s to come:

Football

South Portland’s football team fell from the unbeaten ranks last Friday night at Bonny Eagle. After a scoreless first quarter, the Scots struck first, but the Red Riots answered as Easton Healy connected with Alex Horton for a 51-yard touchdown to make it 6-6. After Bonny Eagle scored again, South Portland struck just before halftime as a 6-yard Healy TD run put the Red Riots on top, 13-12. Again, the Scots retook the lead, but in the third quarter, the Red Riots went in front for the final time on a 2-yard Horton run. Bonny Eagle then scored a touchdown in the fourth period and held on to prevail, 24-19, dropping South Portland to 4-1.

Healy wound up 7-of-14 passing for 134 yards and a touchdown. He ran a dozen times for 47 yards. Horton caught three balls for 89 yards and a score, ran three times for 19 yards and was dangerous on kickoff returns as well.

“I think we belong in the top four and I think that’s the big takeaway,” said Red Riots coach Aaron Filieo. “We just haven’t earned it yet. Tonight would have been another step and we could have won this game.”

South Portland has an even bigger test this coming Friday, when it goes to 4-1 Thornton Academy, the reigning Class A state champion.

“We’ve got a lot of things we can offer, it’s just figuring it out, so we’ll take that into next week and try to go shock the world,” said Filieo. “We just need to be more disciplined, especially on defense. We have to tackle in space. We’ll have to tackle TA in space on their turf. Their guys can move. We’ll be ready. We won’t be nervous or scared. The guys will be motivated from this.”

Cape Elizabeth, meanwhile, fell to 2-3 with a 21-7 loss at York.

The Capers are home versus 2-3 Leavitt, the defending Class C champion, Friday. Last year, Cape Elizabeth lost twice to the Hornets, 45-7 at home in the regular season and 59-26 in Turner in the Class C South semifinals.
