Drake Maye will make his first NFL start this weekend.

The New England Patriots are making a quarterback change and will have the No. 3 overall pick start Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans at Gillette Stadium, according to multiple reports.

The news comes after New England dropped its fourth straight game in Week 5 in which Jacoby Brissett went 18 for 34 for 160 yards. The veteran quarterback isn’t the only problem New England faces, but the team is going to go with the rookie to see if it can spark something for a struggling offense.

Brissett said during his weekly radio interview  on Monday that he expected to start Sunday despite Coach Jerod Mayo not committing to him as he had in weeks prior. Mayo was critical of Brissett’s performance in the 15-10 loss to the Dolphins, telling reporters it “just wasn’t good enough.”

“I thought we played well enough defensively and on special teams to win the football game. Look, as the quarterback – and he understands this – he touches the ball on every single play and we didn’t win the game, or score enough points to win the game,” Mayo said. “I think he would echo that same sentiment that it wasn’t good enough.”

The offensive line has also struggled and has allowed sacks on 13.29% of their pass attempts. But there have been plays where Brissett has held onto the ball too long, causing him to miss wide-open receivers. Through five games, Brissett has completed 58.5% of his passes and thrown for 696 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Maye made one appearance this year in the fourth quarter of the Patriots’ blowout loss to the New York Jets on “Thursday Night Football.” The No. 3 overall pick has been preparing to start and was taking 30% of reps during practice.

DAVID ANDREWS revealed Tuesday that his season-ending injury he suffered in the Patriots’ Week 4 loss to the 49ers was a torn rotator cuff on a podcast with Brian Hoyer.

“In (2021), I ripped the rotator cuff off the bone. Now I’ve torn it in the meat of it,” Andrews said. “So what they’re gonna try to do is put a – now this is someone who didn’t graduate college trying to explain – but they’re gonna try to put a sheath over this and hopefully the muscles regrow.

“It’s not 100%, but it gives me the best shot to continue my football career and that’s all I can ask for.”

Andrews, who turned 32 in July, wants to play next season. That would mark his 11th in the NFL.

Nick Leverett was the team’s starting center in Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins. He allowed a sack, two hits, and five hurries, per Pro Football Focus. Leverett also had a false start. The offensive line as a whole, remains a problem.

Andrews, an on-field coach, was responsible for calling the protections up front.

Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt put the loss of Andrews into context last week.

“Nick (Leverett) is trained to do it, and ready to go. I don’t feel like, I mean, obviously it’s a huge drop,” Van Pelt said of losing Andrews. “Just the person, the leader, everything, his intelligence, his experience.”

ROSTER MOVES: New England released defensive end Jamree Kromah from the 53-man roster and released guard Jerome Carvin and wide receiver Matt Landers from the practice squad on Tuesday. To fill one of the open practice squad spaces, the Patriots signed center Sincere Haynesworth.

Kromah was signed from the Bears practice squad three weeks ago and was inactive the last three games. Carvin had two stints on the practice squad after he re-signed with New England last week. Landers was released ahead of cutdown day but signed to the practice squad.

The Patriots have one open spot on their 53-man roster.
