KENNEBUNK — The battle of the undefeated Rams was a story of sheer domination.
From start to finish.
Inspired by a large crowd for its Homecoming game Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field, the Kennebunk Rams, the reigning Class B state champions, took it to visiting Deering on the game’s first drive and never let up en route to an emphatic 41-0 victory.
Kennebunk had five touchdown drives of over 50 yards, rushed for 300 yards and got a 171-yard, three-touchdown performance from senior captain Brady Stone to improve to 5-0.
“Deering has some big kids up front, but our line handled them well and we made some good plays in the backfield,” said Stone. “It’s a good team win. We did it together.”
Kennebunk got the ball to start the game and drove 78 yards in 10 plays with Stone and Austin West (12 carries, 87 yards, TD) doing most of the heavy lifting. Stone’s 15-yard touchdown burst gave the Rams the lead for good.
“I couldn’t do it without my guys up front, so all praise to them,” Stone said.
Deering (4-1) appeared to get a break later in the first quarter when Tavian Lauture intercepted a Sam Haley pass, but two plays later, Joey Foley fumbled and with 43 seconds left, a 5-yard run by West made the score 14-0.
“We challenged our kids to come out with some fire. We knew Deering was a good opponent with good athletes, so testament to the kids for coming out and accepting the challenge right from the start,” said Kennebunk Coach Keith Noel.
Stone, who ran for 103 yards in the first half, added a 3-yard touchdown run to cap a nine-play, 63-yard march, then added a 2-yard score to put the punctuation mark on a seven-play, 56-yard drive that made it 28-0 at the half to leave Deering staggered.
“We just didn’t show up,” said Deering Coach Brendan Scully. “We didn’t have anything in the pregame, or in the first couple of series, and they’re a very good football team that pushed us around.”
Kennebunk ended all doubt by driving 93 yards in 11 plays in nearly seven minutes in the third quarter, making it 34-0 on a 3-yard run from Ethan Burr, then a 1-yard sneak from Haley with 6:59 to go induced the mercy rule and a running clock.
“The guys up front did a really good job and our backs ran hard today ,and that’s all we can ask for,” Noel said. “They executed the game plan. I’m proud of their effort. We’re just looking on to the next week. Cheverus is our focus. We won’t take any days off.”
Deering mustered just 107 yards of offense, as Foley was held to 55 yards on 15 carries and Lauture completed just 2 of 9 passes for 39 yards with an interception.
“It’s just Week 5 and we’re healthy, so we’ll focus on Westbrook next week,” Scully said.
