A Topsham man serving a state prison sentence for child sexual assault has been indicted on federal charges.
Henry Eichman, 64, of Topsham, was indicted Thursday on four federal charges of sexual exploitation of a child. The former director of a youth theater in Topsham is serving a 10-year state prison sentence on a 2018 child sexual abuse conviction in district court.
The new charges accuse Eichman of coercing four girls into engaging in “sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing visual depictions of such conduct.” The alleged abuse occurred between 2014 and 2016, around the same time as the abuse he was convicted of in 2018 took place.
The indictment also alleges that the abuse involved mailing or shipping materials used to produce the sexually explicit depictions.
The indictment identifies 10 pieces of technology the government will seize from Eichman if he is convicted, including two computers, six hard drives and two cameras. The document suggests that these could have been involved in the alleged visual depictions of abuse.
Eichman co-founded the Midcoast Youth Theater in 2003, where he directed shows each year. He was also a part-time drama teacher at Saint John’s Catholic School in Brunswick.
Eichman was first indicted in the fall of 2016 and charged with 16 counts of sexual abuse of children, shocking neighbors and those who worked with him in youth theater.
In the state case, Eichman was accused of hosting sleepovers and pool parties for children he met through youth theater at his home, where he would abuse them.
Eichman entered an Alford plea on 10 counts in January 2018, an agreement that is essentially a guilty plea but allows Eichman to continue to deny the charges for the record. Alford pleas carry the weight of a conviction.
As a part of the deal, the district attorney for Sagadahoc County dismissed charges of “visual sexual aggression,” which stemmed from incidents in which Eichman was accused of taking photographs and videos of children.
A judge sentenced Eichman to 10 years in the Maine State Prison following his plea. He is currently in prison at Bolduc Correctional Facility in Warren. His earliest release date would be in August 2026, and he would be required to register as a sex offender if released.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office would not comment Thursday on if the alleged victims in the new indictment were a part of the group of eight children involved in the 2018 case.
