An afternoon of entertainment will be offered by local musicians including The Biddo Honeys, The Lisa, Jim & Byon Band, Dana Pearson, Gary Vail, Lincoln Continental, The Dock Squares, Gentlemen & Hooligans, Fugitive, and other special guests.

The free event runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The show is a benefit for Community Outreach Services. Concert-goers are asked to bring a nonperishable food item or cash donation to help those in need in the local community. Patrons are encouraged to grab a chair and some dancing shoes and enjoy the event.

Former MLB player

to appear at vintage game

The Brick Store Museum will host its annual vintage 19th century base ball game at Kennebunk High School on Saturday, July 6 at 11 a.m. The game will be played by living history teams and will feature the game as it was invented in the 1860s, complete with wool uniforms and historic rules. The Dirigo Base Ball Club of Maine will face off against Massachusetts’ Mudville team.

Former Major League Baseball player Josh Osich will throw the first pitch. Osich made his major league debut with the San Francisco Giants in 2015 and subsequently played for the Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox, and the Chicago Cubs. He is reportedly one of the only players in MLB history who is of Basque descent. Osich will sign autographs at the game.

Tickets for the game are $10 and benefit the museum’s educational mission. Children under 12 will be admitted free.

The annual July Summer Solstice Craft Show is  scheduled for July 13-14 in Wells. The two-day event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday at Wells Junior High School on Route 1 in Wells.

This juried craft show features 70-plus crafters and artists who display their handmade wares inside and outside at the junior high. Traditional, contemporary and country crafts are featured. Patrons will see stained glass, jewelry of all types, pottery, soaps, clothing, wood crafts, fiber arts, graphics, photography, handcrafted specialty foods and much more. Many of the crafters and artists have been coming back for years.

The craft show is held rain or shine. Parking and admission are free.

Family Fun Day volunteers

The West Kennebunk Village Committee is seeking local residents for volunteers to assist with its West Kennebunk Family Fun Day event scheduled annually on Saturday, Aug. 3 (9  a.m. to 2 p.m.) to be held on the grounds surrounding the Dorothy Stevens Center located on the Thompson Road.

The committee is seeking individuals to help staff kids games, contests and booths. The committee will be holding a Family Fun Day workshop for volunteers at 6 p.m. July 24 at the Stevens Center. All are welcome.

The committee also welcomes other local businesses, groups, organizations and individuals who may wish to participate in the Family Fun Day event to attend the workshop or contact the town of Kennebunk, West Kennebunk Village Committee for more information.

 

Garden Summer Soiree

Kennebunk Land Trust announced that its third annual summer celebration, the Garden Summer Soiree will take place at The Colony Hotel on July 25 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The soiree will feature a garden party theme.

The event will also mark the culmination of a week-long art auction featuring plein air artwork from local artists. Artists are painting one-of-a-kind pieces of Kennebunk Land Trust preserves, bringing the region’s colors and dramatic landscapes to life on canvas.

The online auction featuring these works will be open Monday, July 22-25. On the evening of July 25, soiree attendees will be able to meet the artists, view the paintings, and participate in the final night of the art auction.

Affairs to Remember Auction

The Center will host its Affairs to Remember Auction. This year’s event will feature a live auction, hosted by auctioneer Durward Parkinson, and a silent auction. This year’s event will once again be held at the River Club, in Kennebunkport, on July 25, from 6-8 p.m.

Attendees can bid on an array of curated items, including trips to local and international destinations, culinary adventures, and more. The silent auction will showcase an array of local gems, from adventures to artworks by local artisans, as well as packages sourced from community businesses.

author Noah St. John

Noah St. John, a Kennebunk High School graduate and author, will return to his hometown to share his journey of success and innovation in a special Rotary presentation on Thursday, Aug. 1, followed by book signings at the South Portland Books-A-Million on Friday, Aug. 2, at 5 p.m., and the new South Portland Barnes and Noble on Saturday, Aug. 3, at noon.

St. John, a Rotary Scholar, National Merit Scholar, and author of 25 books, including the Amazon No. 1 bestsellers, “The Book of Afformations,” and “Millionaire Afformations,” will discuss the power of innovation and transformative thinking.

On Thursday, Aug. 1, from noon to 1:30 p.m., St. John will present at Kennebunk Rotary Club, where he will host a special question-and-answer session into his personal journey from a Kennebunk student to an author and speaker. His presentation, according to a news release is titled, Reflections of a Rotary Scholar, and aims to inspire and empower individuals to achieve exceptional personal and professional growth.

Poetry in the Friary returns to St. Anthony Franciscan Monastery on Saturday, July 27.

The event, scheduled for 1 to 2:30 p.m., will feature Julia Bouwsma, sixth Maine Poet Laureate, 2021-2026; Mihku Paul, Native American poet; Jefferson Navicky, author, four books of poetry and winner of the 2022 Maine Literary Award for poetry; Sandra Regan, poet, MWA artist, and author; and Joao R. Victor, winner of 2019 Maine Poetry Out Loud.

St. Ann’s announces

concert series

St. Ann’s Episcopal Church of Kennebunkport announced last week that it will host a series of live baroque and classical music concerts on July 21, Aug. 4 and Aug. 18. According to a June 6 news release, “the concerts will each feature world-class musicians performing timeless favorites using period instruments like those used at the time these masterworks were written.”

The church is welcoming both members and the general public to attend the concerts with proceeds going toward restoration of the recent storm damage of St. Ann’s historic buildings and property.

Watson, St. Ann’s organist and music director and associate conductor of Boston’s Handel & Haydn Society, will direct the three concerts with varied programs for strings, keyboards, wind instruments and vocalists. Watson, who played on the original soundtrack of the Mozart movie, Amadeus, among many other recordings, will perform on harpsichord and 51/2-Octave Viennese Fortepiano, similar to one owned by Mozart. The instruments were crafted in Freeport, Maine, by the American keyboard maker, R. J. Regier.

The series will comprise three events held at St. Ann’s oceanfront Stone Chapel at 167 Ocean Ave. in Kennebunkport. Each concert is on a Sunday from 5 to 6:15 p.m. General admission tickets are $40 and are available online at https://stannskennebunkport.org/church-events/2024-concerts/tickets/ or at the door on concert day. Free parking is available on site.

Fishermen’s group

offers youth memberships

At the April 2024 New England Fishermen’s Stewardship Association  board meeting, the group voted to offer free NEFSA youth memberships to all interested persons under the age of 18. The initiative was unanimously approved.

According to a press release, “New England Fishermen’s Stewardship Association works to protect “sustainable American commercial fisheries for the future generations of harvesters to come is a top priority. As mentors to the next generation, we are enthusiastic about working with our youth on the water and off and serving as a resource, while building relationships across generations. One-hundred percent of the NEFSA staff and board members have years of experience in the commercial fishing industry, and we are excited to share our collective knowledge and work together for the next generation of U.S. wild harvesters.”

Church on the Cape

offers camp scholarships

Church on the Cape in Cape Porpoise is offering five paid Camp Mechuwana scholarships for interested students in grades 4-12. Scholarships for family camp programs and special needs campers are also available. Applicants do not need to be church members to apply and there are no income requirements.

Camp Mechuwana, according to a press release, is a United Methodist Church camp in Winthrop, Maine, that has hosted campers of all socio-economic and religious backgrounds for the past 75 years. Located on more than 200 acres of forest land bordering Lower Narrows Pond and Lake Annabessacook, the camp consists of nature trails, a boat dock, swimming area, cabins, a theater, chapel, dining commons, basketball court, and a sports field.

The New England Radio Discussion Society meets biweekly on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. throughout the year at The New School in Kennebunk. hosts star parties

The Astronomical Society of Northern New England has set its schedule for public Star Parties through August and invites the public to attend. The society operates its own observatory, the Talmage Observatory at Starfield, on Route 35, in West Kennebunk.

At the Star Parties, the public, as well as society members, are most invited to observe the heavens through club telescopes, as well as member telescopes. Stars, visible planets, and deep-sky objects can all be viewed. Experienced society members are on hand to guide the observing, explain what is being seen, and answer questions. There is no fee.

nature walk schedule

Kennebunk Land Trust released the dates for its Nature Walk series. The first Saturday of each month, the land trust hosts a nature walk on a different preserve following a different theme. Participants are invited to explore a new local preserve and enjoy nature in all seasons.

The walks are led by local Maine Guides and master naturalists, who take participants through the nature preserve and share knowledge and ask questions about the flora, fauna, and nature.

The walks are free of charge for all ages and held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Donations are accepted and well-behaved dogs are welcome. The schedule:
