Seals being watched over by an eagle at Halfway Island lighthouse off Yarmouth. Photo by Karl Ramsdell

Karl Ramsdell has lived in Old Orchard Beach all his life and has been a photographer for six years.

You can see many of his photographs on the Instagram page he launched about five years ago.

Many of Ramsdell’s photos are of seals that, at times, seem as if they are posing for the camera and are on the verge of saying something. Other photos capture the marine mammals napping, seemingly without a care in the world.

Ramsdell’s eye is sharp, making for striking photos that grant the viewer passage into the intimate world of his subjects.

He’s also captured foxes, birds, deer and otters.

But it’s the seals that are the hallmark of his work, and Ramsdell said he mostly uses his stand-up paddleboard to shoot them, which gives him unique access without the jarring sound of a boat’s motor.
