It is crucial that society is aware of the closures of assisted living and nursing facilities, as well as the caregiver crisis. These issues have a devastating impact on families who are caring for their loved ones with special needs. It is important to note that these challenges have persisted for decades and are not solely an economic matter.

Maine ended fiscal year 2023 with a $141 million surplus. Maine Stabilization Fund, also commonly known as the Rainy Day Fund, has reached $968.3 million — a record high and the maximum allowed under our state formula.

Now the Department of Justice is auditing the Department of Health and Human Services for unsound practices.

The special needs population will never forget the hardships they have endured and continue to face under past and current leadership. It is vital to remember that, despite our position, we have children, grandchildren, parents and we are not immune to these issues. They can affect us and our loved ones as well.

It is my hope that society will take immediate action to address these pressing concerns and work toward providing better care and support for the special needs community. Their well-being and the impact on their families should remain at the forefront of our priorities.
