Mary Louise (Nutting) Emerson

FREEPORT – Mary Louise (Nutting) Emerson, 91, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2024, at Hawthorne House in Freeport.

Peg or Peggy, as she was known to her family and friends, was the beloved daughter of Chester and Gladys (Lowther) Nutting. She was born in Skowhegan on July 22, 1932.

She graduated from Skowhegan High School in 1950, Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield in 1951, and from Colby College in 1955 with a major in mathematics. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. In 1959 she earned her master’s degree in Education at the University of Maine in Orono.

Peg taught one year at Clinton High School and then 36 years at Freeport High School, retiring in 1992.

She was an active member in Woodfords Congregational Church in Portland and a member of the Golden Sheaf Chapter #114 Order of the Eastern Star.

Peg is survived by two brothers, Chester A. Nutting of Scarborough, and Robert W. Nutting (wife Wendy) of Oakland; eight nephews, three nieces; and several grand and great-grandnephews and nieces.

There will be no public services. There will be a graveside family service at a later date when she is laid to rest in the family plot at the Southside Cemetery in Skowhegan alongside her parents and paternal grandparents.

Her family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Hawthorne House for the loving care they have given her these past four and one-half years and for the hospice employees who have provided care this past year.
