John E. Soule

TUCSON, Ariz. – John died peacefully at the age of 87 on Jan. 18, 2024 in Tucson, Ariz. John was born on June 24, 1936 to Karl and Barbara Soule in Portland, and spent his early years in Cape Elizabeth. After graduating from Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire, he worked for many years for Maine Medical Center as a medical transcriptionist.

John married Deborah Gorham in Portland on Sept. 13, 1986. After retiring from Maine Medical, John and Deb moved to Tucson, Ariz. where John worked at the Tucson Medical Center until his retirement in 2000.

John loved the outdoors whether in Maine or Arizona. John was passionate about astronomy, loved to hike the trails in nearby Sabino Canyon, Mount Lemon and the Santa Catalinas in Tucson, Ariz., and snow ski in Maine. He always enjoyed a good meal and happy hour with family and friends and was always up for a conversation about trains, about which his knowledge was extensive.

John volunteered with the Tucson Astronomy Association, tutored children in reading at the St. Phillips Church after school program, and was known for his constant kindness, patience, and consideration of others which will be greatly missed.

John was predeceased by his wife of 34 years and the love of his life Deborah G. Soule; his parents Karl and Barbara Soule; his brother, Peter Soule, sister, Mary Davidson; father and mother-in-law, Roger and Nancy Gorham; and his brother-in-law, F. William Schweke II.

John is survived by his sister-in-law Anne G. Bodfish (David) of South Portland, sister-in-law, Lucy S. Gorham of Carrboro, N.C.; numerous nieces and nephews, and close friends Art and Mary Jane Knapp, of Tucson, Ariz.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. at Spurwink Church with interment following at Riverside Cemetery in Cape Elizabeth.
