Lawrence A. Ingerson

FREEPORT – Lawrence A. Ingerson, 85, passed away June 9, 2024, at his home surrounded by family. Born on Sept. 20, 1938 in Rochester, N.H., to Harold L. and Dorothy M. (Bellemeur) Ingerson, Lawrence grew up in Freeport, working as a teenager for his father’s logging business, and was a 1957 graduate of Freeport High School. After high school, Lawrence married his high school sweetheart Harriett Morrill, served in the Marine Corps Reserves, worked with his father at Harold L. Ingerson Excavating and Blasting Inc., and started a large family in Pownal.

Known for his voracious work ethic, he worked as an heavy equipment operator, truck driver, foreman, and eventually owner. Lawrence worked on countless water, sewer lines, and blasting jobs for many homes and towns from Dover-Foxcroft to communities in southern Maine, including large water and sewer pipe jobs in Freeport, Portland, Lewiston, and the University of Maine at Orono. Lawrence built the causeway that connects Cousins Island to Little John Island and he and his father blasted and cleaned Rockland Harbor in the 1960s. His hobbies included four-wheeling, planting a large vegetable garden annually, watching movies, walking his dogs, reading action and adventure novels, and studying the American Civil War and World War II. He was always willing to have a conversation about the 20th Maine Regiment and its exploits at the Battle of Gettysburg.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his eldest daughter Deborah Foss of Freeport.

He is survived by his son-in-law Bruce Foss and his four other children: son Lawrence Ingerson and his wife Eva of Huntsville, Alabama; daughters, Laura Ingerson and her husband Ben Twitchell of Bar Harbor and Heidi Todd of Freeport; son Mark Ingerson and his wife Sharon of Salem, Virginia; sister Lorraine Hiles of Phippsburg; 13 grandchildren: Brandon, Jesse, Caitlin, Valerie, Tyler, Matthew, Michael, Molly, Jake, Josh, Alyssa, Kaedan, and Levi; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Comfort Caregivers, especially Lisa Wells and Chans hospice care for their exceptional care of Lawrence.

There will be a celebration of life Sunday, June 23, at the Hilton Garden Inn, Jewell banquet room, in Freeport (at 5 Park Street). Visiting hours will be 11 a.m. -3 p.m.
