Louis “Louie” Wilton Spear

CUMBERLAND – Louis “Louie” Wilton Spear, 90, of Cumberland, passed away peacefully at home on June 8, 2024. Born on June 2, 1934, in Portland, as the younger twin of Lawrence W., and was the beloved son of George Spear and Frances Fountain.

Louie attended Portland High School, graduating in 1953. Shortly after, in 1956 he was drafted into the U.S. Army. During his service, he trained in Texas and was later stationed in Germany as a medic, achieving the rank of Specialist 4th Class (SP4) before his honorable discharge in 1958.

In 1954, Louie met Jean McCormack Allen at a roller skating rink in Portland, and they married on New Year’s Eve of 1956. After his military service, Louie embarked on a successful career as a salesman in the audio-visual industry, working for Commercial Distributors and later for Baker and Taylor Video until his retirement in 1996.

Louie had a zest for life and a passion for many hobbies, especially boating in his early years. He loved taking his family on island adventures in Casco Bay and enjoyed lobstering, maintaining up to 150 lobster traps. His other hobbies included golfing, bowling, building two boats, motorcycle riding, hunting, and carpentry. Louie crafted numerous pieces of furniture and crafts for their home and built their residence in Cumberland, where he lived for almost 63 years. His workshop was a place of endless creativity, filled with ongoing projects.

Louie and Jean shared many adventures, traveling across the country on his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle alongside his twin brother, Larry, and his wife, Theola. Up until the age of 88, Louie continued to take motorcycle trips with Jean, transitioning to a Honda Gold Wing trike in his later years.

Louis was predeceased by his parents, his twin brother Larry, his brother James and his sisters Natalie, Marylin, and Carolyn.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Jean McCormack Spear; his children, Mark Spear of Haynesville, Alan Spear and his wife Angie of South Portland, Darren Spear and his wife Michele of Cumberland, and Shawn Spear and his wife Cindi of Buxton; four grandchildren, Travis, Nickolas, Alina, and Aiden and step grandson, Santiago.

A private graveside service will be held at Moss Side Cemetery in Cumberland and a private celebration of life will be held among family and close friends.

Louie will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his unwavering dedication to his family, and his boundless creativity. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
