I thought the high school consolidation in Portland was still in the early stage of discussion, but apparently it’s a done deal.

Every year I look forward to reading about the graduations of our three public high schools. This year is no different. Last Thursday, June 6, I enjoyed reading about the Portland High graduation and hearing about their amazing senior class. It was awesome.

As I opened Friday’s paper, I was looking forward to reading about the graduations of Casco Bay and Deering High School. Sadly, the only thing I found was one small picture of a Deering graduate outside Merrill Auditorium. There was no writeup about either of our two other public high schools. What message does this send?

As a retired teacher, I know how hard many students work to get to their graduation day and the importance of a little recognition for completing 12-plus years of school. I find it shameful for the Portland Press Herald to recognize just one of our three public high schools on the biggest day of their young lives.
