Garden Summer Soiree

Kennebunk Land Trust announced that its third annual summer celebration, the Garden Summer Soiree will take place at The Colony Hotel on July 25 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The soiree will feature a garden party theme.

The event will also mark the culmination of a week-long art auction featuring plein air artwork from local artists. Artists are painting one-of-a-kind pieces of Kennebunk Land Trust preserves, bringing the region’s colors and dramatic landscapes to life on canvas.

The public is invited to find the artists out in the preserves and watch them work June 21-23. Find the details on where and when they will be at www.kennebunklandtrust.org.

The online auction featuring these works will be open Monday, July 22-25. On the evening of July 25, soiree attendees will be able to meet the artists, view the paintings, and participate in the final night of the art auction.

Affairs to Remember Auction

The Center will host its Affairs to Remember Auction. This year’s event will feature a live auction, hosted by auctioneer Durward Parkinson, and a silent auction. This year’s event will once again be held at the River Club, in Kennebunkport, on July 25, from 6-8 p.m.

Attendees can bid on an array of curated items, including trips to local and international destinations, culinary adventures, and more. The silent auction will showcase an array of local gems, from adventures to artworks by local artisans, as well as packages sourced from community businesses.

Tickets for the event are priced at $50, which includes admission, two complimentary cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres. Proceeds from ticket sales and auction bids will go directly to supporting the Center, an organization dedicated to serving the 50-plus community.

Rotary Club to host

author Noah St. John

Noah St. John, a Kennebunk High School graduate and author, will return to his hometown to share his journey of success and innovation in a special Rotary presentation on Thursday, Aug. 1, followed by book signings at the South Portland Books-A-Million on Friday, Aug. 2, at 5 p.m., and the new South Portland Barnes and Noble on Saturday, Aug. 3, at noon.

St. John, a Rotary Scholar, National Merit Scholar, and author of 25 books, including the Amazon No. 1 bestsellers, “The Book of Afformations,” and “Millionaire Afformations,” will discuss the power of innovation and transformative thinking.

On Thursday, Aug. 1, from noon to 1:30 p.m., St. John will present at Kennebunk Rotary Club, where he will host a special question-and-answer session into his personal journey from a Kennebunk student to an author and speaker. His presentation, according to a news release is titled, Reflections of a Rotary Scholar, and aims to inspire and empower individuals to achieve exceptional personal and professional growth.

St. John lives in northeast Ohio with his wife, Babette. The events are open to the public.

“Returning to Kennebunk always feels like coming home,” said St. John in an email. “I’m thrilled to share the strategies that helped me achieve success and to inspire others to dream big and ask better questions of themselves.”

Downeast Fiddle Festival

coming to West Kennebunk

The second of a pair of shows featuring fiddlers from Downeast Maine and the Maritimes will close out the spring season of the Concerts in West K! series. Part 2 of the festival will take place Friday, June 21, at 7:30 p.m., at the West Kennebunk United Methodist Church. Featured performers in the concert will be fiddlers Troy MacGillivray and Mari Black, and guitarist Matt Heaton.

MacGillivray has performed previously in the Concerts in West K! series and done house concerts in the area. Raised in Lanark, Nova Scotia, he is a master of both the fiddle and piano traditions of northeastern Nova Scotia.

ase, Black has been called “one of the brightest fiddlers around today.” She is a multi-style violinist and champion fiddler who is known for her energetic playing, lively stage presence, and virtuosic fiddling.

Guitarist and bouzouki player Heaton performs widely with his wife, Shannon (the duo appeared in West Kennebunk in March, 2024), and has appeared with countless others including the Karan Casey Band, the Boys of the Lough, and Robbie O’Connell.

Graves Memorial Library will host the US book launch of author Susan Doherty Hannaford’s new book at the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library on Wednesday, June 26, at 6 p.m. Doherty Hannaford will present her latest work, “Monday Rent Boy,” a literary mystery, according to a news release, that delves into the complexities of boyhood friendship, family secrecy, shame, divided loyalties, and the experience of being a bystander. Throughout the narrative, the story also emphasizes the importance of resilience, a trait that is learned rather than inherited.

The 23rd annual Wells Antiques Show and Sale will be held on Sunday, June 30, on the seaside grounds of the historic Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm. More than 75 exhibitors from all over New England, New York, New Jersey and Virginia will display and sell antiques in every area of the antiques market under large and small tents, on two floors in the barn, and in the open.

Poetry in the Friary returns to St. Anthony Franciscan Monastery on Saturday, July 27.

The event, scheduled for 1 to 2:30 p.m., will feature Julia Bouwsma, sixth Maine Poet Laureate, 2021-2026; Mihku Paul, Native American poet; Jefferson Navicky, author, four books of poetry and winner of the 2022 Maine Literary Award for poetry; Sandra Regan, poet, MWA artist, and author; and Joao R. Victor, winner of 2019 Maine Poetry Out Loud.

Drive-through

barbecue at Legion

American Legion Post 159 will host a drive-through barbecue at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 28. Legion Post 159 is located at 102 Main St. (across from the police station) in Kennebunkport.

The barbecue will run until the food runs out, say organizers. The menu includes pulled pork, smoked chicken, bratwurst, beans, coleslaw, potato salad, jalapeno cornbread and a brownie. The price is $15 per plate.

St. Ann’s announces

concert series

St. Ann’s Episcopal Church of Kennebunkport announced last week that it will host a series of live baroque and classical music concerts on July 21, Aug. 4 and Aug. 18. According to a June 6 news release, “the concerts will each feature world-class musicians performing timeless favorites using period instruments like those used at the time these masterworks were written.”

The church is welcoming both members and the general public to attend the concerts with proceeds going toward restoration of the recent storm damage of St. Ann’s historic buildings and property.

Watson, St. Ann’s organist and music director and associate conductor of Boston’s Handel & Haydn Society, will direct the three concerts with varied programs for strings, keyboards, wind instruments and vocalists. Watson, who played on the original soundtrack of the Mozart movie, Amadeus, among many other recordings, will perform on harpsichord and 51/2-Octave Viennese Fortepiano, similar to one owned by Mozart. The instruments were crafted in Freeport, Maine, by the American keyboard maker, R. J. Regier.

The series will comprise three events held at St. Ann’s oceanfront Stone Chapel at 167 Ocean Ave. in Kennebunkport. Each concert is on a Sunday from 5 to 6:15 p.m. General admission tickets are $40 and are available online at https://stannskennebunkport.org/church-events/2024-concerts/tickets/ or at the door on concert day. Free parking is available on site.

The New School hosts

Pride Pizza Party

The New School announced its first-ever Pride Pizza Party, a community event celebrating inclusivity and community spirit, will take place on Saturday, June 29, from noon to 3 p.m. The New School is located at 38 York St. in Kennebunk.

The Pride Pizza Party will feature food, activities, and live entertainment for all ages. The event will include wood-fired pizza, lemonade stand, sweet treats, music and board games for teens.

This event is open to the entire community. A clothing drive is being organized during the event to collect gently used clothing that will be donated to area nonprofits.

Admission to the event is free, with food and beverages available for purchase. All proceeds from the event will go toward supporting The New School education programs and initiatives.

Concert at

First Parish

First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Kennebunk will host a concert by flutist Emi Ferguson and pianist Chris Staknys on Wednesday, June 26, at 7 p.m. They will perform the music of Bach, Burleigh, Poulenc, and Gershwin, as well as original works by both performers. A $25 donation is requested at the door.

A 2023 recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Ferguson can be heard live in concerts and festivals with groups including the Handel and Haydn Society, and as the music director of Camerata Pacifica Baroque.

Staknys graduated from The Juilliard School with a degree in solo piano performance. He currently serves as music director of First Parish Church in Kennebunk. He has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall and has appeared on NPR’s From The Top radio show.
