Sherman Louis Lahaie Jr.

FALMOUTH – Sherman Louis Lahaie, Jr. was born Feb. 26, 1942, in Lewiston, son of Sherman and Mary (Dexter) Lahaie.

Educated in Lewiston schools, Sherman graduated from Maine Central Institute, University of Maine, and obtained multiple academic advanced degrees.

After graduation, Sherm served with the Navy as a reservist in the North Atlantic. He worked as an engineer for the State Highway Commission and a Portland engineering consulting firm. Mr. Lahaie was involved with police and fire services for over 40 years. He continued his career by working in the U.S. Forest Service and for the Department of Homeland Security. Sherman was a member of numerous organizations that served communities and children. His standard was to “constantly seek new ways to serve”.

Sherman loved the outdoors from sea to mountain. He was a craftsman building boats and model trains. Mr. Lahaie was a historian who participated in Civil War reenactments on the battlefield in Gettysburg, Pa. His real passion was family.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Biron; son, Derek, wife Sue, granddaughters Julia, fiancé Westin Cohen, Jenna, Jessica of Massachusetts; daughter, Danielle Kelliher, husband Tom, grandsons Emmet and Gates of Cape Cod; sister, Anne-Mayre Dexter, husband Dennis Danie of South Portland; nieces Emily Lamb, husband Jonathan, daughter Avery, son Walker of Hamilton, Mass.; Louisa Raby, husband John, sons Dexter and Derek of Scarborough; brother, Daniel Boutin, wife Ann Adams of Portland, sons Elliot Boutin, wife Tegan Perry, daughter Dorothy of Australia; Alexander Boutin of New York City, N.Y.; Christine Wight, daughter of Patricia Biron of Hiram; grandsons Cameron Blair, wife Samantha of Bridgewater, Mass., Tyler Blair, fiancée Hayley Boutin of Townsend, Mass.; cousin, Stephen Thompson of Hallowell, wife Libby, children Laura Brady and David Thompson. Sherman leaves behind many friends and family who loved him dearly.

Visiting hours will be at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 US-1, Scarborough, on Sunday, June 23, from 12 to 3 p.m.

In honor of his dedication to the fire service, a tribute will be held immediately following visiting hours, at Scarborough High School from 4 to 5 p.m. It is requested that all guests be seated by 3:45 p.m. All are welcome.

Church service and burial will be private.
