Maine will receive $4.8 million as part of a $700 million agreement to settle a lawsuit filed by 43 states against Johnson & Johnson for deceptive marketing of talc-based baby powder, according to federal court records.

Johnson & Johnson reached a tentative agreement in January over the lawsuit, which claimed that the company hid links between possible links in its powder to various cancers and mesothelioma. The agreement was finalized on Tuesday, pending judicial approval.

Johnson & Johnson stopped selling talcum powder in 2020 in the U.S. and Canada, and globally in 2023. In addition to the financial settlement, the company has agreed to not resume the manufacture and sale of talcum powder.

“While deceiving consumers about the safety of a product is deplorable, it is particularly egregious that the unsafe product at issue was primarily marketed for babies,” said Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey, in a statement.
