CAPE ELIZABETH – James Francis Colby passed peacefully May 31, 2024 surrounded by his loving husband, David Sturdevant and friends.

Born in Wiscasset, April 9, 1943, to Madeline Fossett Colby and Earl B. Colby Sr., James attended schools in Wiscasset, graduating WHS in 1961. He received his bachelor’s in music at St Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, and master’s degrees in performance and music education at the University of British Columbia. He taught and worked many theater groups in Canada for 20 years.

He continued teaching and working throughout Midcoast and Southern Maine with numerous theater companies after returning to Maine. Jim was in over 200 productions in various capacities and was the music director and organist for numerous churches, his last being Emmaus. Jim also worked for Victoria Mansion and will be greatly missed by the theater, church, mansion and music communities.

Jim is survived by his husband David; brother, Richard Colby and wife Janet; and eight nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Earl Colby, Jr. and sister, Priscilla Dalton.

David thanks the wonderful staff at Seaside Rehab/Nursing Home and Hospice of Southern Maine.

Calling hours Friday, June 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. and service Saturday, June 15 at 10 a.m. are both at Emmaus Lutheran Church, 265 Middle Rd., Falmouth.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Jim’s name to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or to Hospice of Southern Maine.
