Dave was a precocious child, able to read the newspaper at the age of 4. In his youth, he spent much time with his beloved grandparents, and throughout his life he maintained an unwavering pride in his family and a keen interest in his heritage. A talented musician, he sang morning masses at Saint Athanasius Church and played clarinet and oboe in the Stephens High School band. A highlight was his solo performance of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto at his high school graduation.

David graduated from Stephen’s High School in 1963 at the age of 16. He attended St. Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in modern languages and a master’s degree in teaching. His professional journey was interesting and varied. He began his career while in high school as an announcer and DJ at WRUM radio. After college, he taught French in Halifax. Upon returning to Maine, he worked as a broadcaster for many years at WGAN radio and television. He later transitioned to a career as a database programmer at Fairchild Semiconductor.

David’s interests and passions were as varied as his career. He was fascinated with genealogy, tirelessly researching his family’s history. This passion led him on two memorable trips to Italy to meet and connect with relatives. Throughout his life, David maintained an interest in language and mastered French, German and several other languages. He also had a lifelong passion for politics, staying informed and advocating for the progressive causes he believed in. His thirst for knowledge and history made him a formidable challenger in family Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit games.

David was predeceased by his parents; and his sister-in-law, Ellen (Rafuse) MacDonald.

He is survived by his four brothers, Dennis and his wife Nancy of Hooksett, N.H., Tom and his wife Elizabeth Fowler of Portland, Peter of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Bill and his wife Tammy of Mexico, and two sisters, Nancy Johnson and her husband Dale of Dover, N.H., and Jane Hoffman and her husband Jeff of Falmouth. Additionally, he is survived by 10 nieces and nephews; and five great-nieces and nephews, all of whom he held dear.

A celebration of life will be planned at a later time and a private burial will take place at St. John’s Cemetery in Rumford.
