WINTHROP — Four people were taken to the hospital after a three-vehicle crash Saturday night at the intersection of U.S. Route 202 and Winthrop Center Road in Winthrop, police said.
A 2010 Dodge Challenger driven by Robert Barter of West Gardiner was eastbound at high speed on Route 202 shortly after 9:30 p.m. when it hit the back of a 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck that was towing an enclosed trailer, according to the Winthrop Police Department.
The impact caused the Dodge Ram to veer into the westbound lane of Route 202 and hit a 2017 Subaru Forester.
The three vehicles and the trailer were destroyed, police said.
The four occupants of the Dodge Challenger — Barter, 38; Gavin White, 18, of West Gardiner; Zachary Kristan, 18, of Gardiner; and Theron Corliss, 18, of Pittston — were taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.
White and Barter were listed in critical condition Monday, while Kristan’s and Corliss’ injuries were not considered life-threatening.
A MaineGeneral spokeswoman said Monday that White and Barter were treated and transferred to another facility.
The driver of the Dodge Ram, Sarah Duran, 38, of Belgrade, and front seat passenger, Tyler Duran, 38, were not injured, police said.
The driver of the Subaru Forester, Dianna Baker, 44, and passengers Rodney Baker, 44, of Winthrop and two minors suffered minor injuries, police said.
The area where the crash occurred was closed for about five hours while the Maine State Police reconstructed the crash.
Along with Winthrop police, the Winthrop Fire Department, the Manchester Fire Department, the Winthrop Ambulance Service, Augusta Rescue, the Monmouth Police Department and the Kennebec County District Attorney’s Office responded to the crash scene.
