John Russo

SOUTH PORTLAND – John Russo, 93, of South Portland died March 21, 2024, at Gosnell House in Scarborough after a long period of poor health.

John was born April 10, 1930, in Providence R.I., a son of Concetta and Saverio Russo.

John was a first generation American who grew up during the Depression and developed a strong commitment to social justice. He was a kind man of great integrity with a delightful sense of humor as well as being a gifted artist.

Family meant everything to him and he was devoted to his beloved wife of 68 years Benita, their three wonderful sons, Gene, Richard and Morry and to their wonderful daughters-in-laws, Elaine Wrin and Jennifer Pert Russo.

He is survived by his wife Benita Russo of South Portland, his son Gene Russo and daughter-in-law Elaine Wrin of Wilmington, Massachusetts, and son Morry Russo and daughter-in-law Jennifer Pert Russo of Steep Falls; and his beloved sister Lenore Russo of Providence, R.I.

He was predeceased by his son Richard and granddaughter Stephanie.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at 2 p.m., June 21, 2024, at First Congregational Church, 301 Cottage Road, South Portland. There will be light refreshments where people can share their memories of John.

Benita gives huge thanks to everyone at Hospice and Gosnell House for the amazing kindness and support she and John received while in their care.

In lieu of flowers, people are asked to make a donation to Gosnell Memorial Hospice House of Hospice of Southern Maine.
