FALMOUTH — Falmouth’s boys’ lacrosse team already had clinched the top seed for the upcoming Class A state tournament before ending its regular season Thursday against Thornton Academy, but the Navigators again showed why they’re the team to beat.
Led by five goals from sophomore Hayden Davis, a strong defensive effort, and dominance in the faceoff circle from sophomore Peter Kearns, Falmouth rolled to a 12-5 victory, capping a 13-1 regular season.
“Credit to the guys,” said Navigators Coach Dave Barton, whose team is ranked No. 1 in the Varsity Maine top 10. “I’m certainly proud of them. We’ll enjoy this tonight, and everything from now on is earned.”
The Golden Trojans (11-3) scored first, on a goal from Jake Marcotte. In less than five minutes, though, Davis scored twice and Cole Allan and Gio Guerrette also struck for Falmouth, which held a 4-2 lead after one quarter.
“We have so many options on offense,” said Allan, a senior captain who finished with two goals. “All the guys can step up. Everyone here is a threat and you have to be careful how you guard us.”
Two more goals from Davis and another from Allan made it 7-4 at halftime.
Despite losing 13 consecutive faceoffs in one stretch, Thornton hung tough and had ample opportunities in the third quarter to make things interesting, only to be stymied by junior goalie Cam Sinclair (11 saves) and his defensive mates.
“We love playing defense,” said junior captain and defenseman Miles Thaxter. “We’re just a bunch of dogs and we just get out there and play.”
“We say a lot, if we get scored on, at least we want to make teams earn it,” Barton added. “They’re a really good team, and I think we tightened it up in the second half.”
Falmouth took an 8-4 lead to the fourth quarter, then broke the game open, as Gio Guerrette scored twice, Evan Yale added a goal, and Davis finished it off.
Gio Guerrette finished with three goals, and Joey Guerrette and Yale (two assists) got with one apiece.
The Navigators have a week off before they’ll host a state quarterfinal. After being upset by South Portland in last year’s semifinals, this group has its eye on going all the way.
“We want everyone’s best punch,” said Allan. “We rise well to challenges. We’ll put in the work.”
Jack DeLeo led the Golden Trojans with two goals. Marcotte, Adam Donovan and Noah Veroneau added one apiece. Colin Pennell, who entered the game in the second quarter, made eight saves.
“I thought we had them scouted pretty well, but they have a lot of offensive weapons that make you pay,” said Thornton Coach Ryan Hersey. “They beat us pretty consistently on faceoffs. We’re not used to winning at least 50 percent.
“I’m hoping if we can see Falmouth again, we can make it a much more competitive game. Just like in 2018 and 2019, we want to make sure that if we win, there was no doubt we’ve beaten the best teams.”
